Campeonato Europeo de Armas Prehistóricas. European Championship of Prehistoric Weapons (Piñar - Granada-)

Los días 10 y 11 de octubre se celebró en Piñar (Granada) esta competición, que incluía pruebas de tiro con arco y con propulsor. Allí fuímos Nacho y yo, a probar con nuestros propulsores. La verdad es que fué un fin de semana fantástico. El tiempo fué muy agradable y el recorrido muy divertido y variado. Además la organización del evento se preocupó de que no faltara nada, pues hubo comida y bebida en abundancia. Desde luego, el año que viene nos verán por allí de nuevo, esta vez, para participar también en la prueba de tiro con arco. Desde aquí, agradecer a todos los implicados en este evento, y en especial a Cele, por haber organizado todo esto.

Last october the 10 and 11 in Piñar (Granada) held this tournament (primitive bow and atlatl). There we went, Nacho and me, to throw with our atlatls. It really was a fantastic weekend. The weather was nice and so it was the tour throwing at the targets; very funny. There were plenty of food and drinks, too. Of course, we will be there next year, and then, we will shoot with bow aswell. Thanks a lot to those involved in this tournament, speciall to you, Cele.

Pantano de Canales (Granada)

Un día antes del campeonato europeo de armas primitivas, Nacho (Canis) y yo, decidimos pasar noche vivaqueando en este precioso lugar. Un sitio tranquilo donde disfrutar de la naturaleza. Entre otras cosas, practicamos un poco con nuestros propulsores, probamos alguna madera para ver si se podía conseguir fuego por fricción e hicimos una excursión por los alrededores, donde descubrimos unos buenos ejemplares de almez, de donde sacar madera para futuros arcos. Cuando caía la tarde, las montañas que teníamos en frente iban cambiando de color, ofreciendo un marco mágico.

Lo mejor: estar calentito dentro del saco de dormir durante la noche, abrir los ojos y ver el cielo estrellado que nos cubría.

A day before the european championship of primitive weapons, Nacho (Canis) and me, decided to stay out and sleep in this beautifull and calm place. We had the chance to practice a bit with our atlatls, we tested some wood to try to get some fire by friction and we walk around for a while till we found some nice trees that can be used to get good wood for future bow proyects. At sun set, the mountains at the other side of the lake looked magic, changing their colour.

The best thing: to be warm in your sleeping bag, open your eyes and see all the stars over us.

Fuego por fricción a mano (Hand drill)

Hace tiempo que logré hacer fuego por fricción con arco y desde entonces lo he estado practicando y probando diferentes maderas. El siguiente paso natural parecía ser el lograrlo sin el arco, simplemente a mano. Así que lo intenté, justo después de lograrlo con el arco, por un tiempo, aunque sólo logré un poco de humo y poco más.
El fin de semana pasado leyendo el libro "Primitive Technology; a book of earth skills" me despertó las ganas por retomar el tema del fuego por fricción a mano. Así que, dado que tenía algún taladro seco de junco y algo de madera de chopo (una combinación que podría funcionar, según el libro) hoy me he puesto a ello. Y he estado cerca, muy cerca. Creo que me falta depurar un poco la técnica para no perder tiempo entre que dejo de rotar el taladro y subo mis manos hasta la parte más alta de este. Pero sí, creo que es sólo cuestión de trabajar un poco más en ello y podré consegurilo. Hoy lo he intentado hasta que me he conseguido unas ampollas respetables (la mancha roja es la más espectacula de ellas).

It has been a while since i got fire with the bow drill and since then i ´ve been practicing and testing different types of wood. The next natural step seen to be the hand drill. So i did tried after my initial success witn the bow, but i just got a bit of smoke and little more than that.

Last weekend, anyway, while reading "Primitive Technology; a book of earth skills" i felt i should give it another try. So, since i´ve got some dry cattail and popplar at home (a combination that should work, so it is said in the book) i started to work with it today. And i have been close, very close. I think i need to work on my skill a bit more so don´t waste time to get my hands to the top of the drill once i get to the botton. But i think it´s just a matter of working a bit on it and i´ll be there. Today i´ve been on it till i got some nice looking blisters (the red stain is the more spectacular of them).

I´ll keep trying.

Mi nuevo Propulsor (My new Atlatl)

Uff, últimamente no encuentro demasiado tiempo libre para casi nada (demasiado trabajo) y apenas si he hecho nada nuevo digno de ser citado en el blog. A pesar de estar saturado de trabajo, me las arreglé para hacerme un nuevo propulsor, con el que quería participar en el Campeonato Europeo de Tiro con Armas Prehistóricas (celebrado en Piñar -Granada-), ya que no estaba demasiado contento con el último que me hice en acebuche (utilicé la madera sin esperar a que estuviera completamente seca y pagué el precio a mi impaciencia...el propulsor, a los días de estar acabado, empezó a retorcerse sobre sí mismo, y dejó de inspirarme confianza). Afortunadamente, encontré el tiempo justo para acabarlo.

I hardly found time to make some new stuff lately, (nothing worth to be included in my blog, anyway), due to work excess. Somehow, i managed to make a new atlatl to shoot with at the European Championship of Prehistoric Weapons ( held at Piñar -Granada-, October the 10 and 11) as i wasn´t 100% happy with the last one i made (i used a not properly dried wood and i pay the price...Once i finished it, the atlatl started to twist day by day...it just didn´t fell right when i shoot with it. Luckly, i found some free time to make a new one.

Esta vez utilicé avellano, que es una madera que cada vez me gusta más, y traté de darle un estilo de propulsor americano....La piedra que sirve de peso está colocada simplemente a modo de adorno pues no me molesté en buscar el mejor sitio para ella, simplemente me gusta allí donde está. La empuñadura para colocar los dedos es de cuero; tanto ésta como la piedra, están atadas con tendón artificial. La zona para agarrar el propulsor lleva un pequeño rebaje en los lados para permitir el tipo de agarre entre los dedos (que es como quería usar este propulsor)

This time i used hazel, wich is a wood i quite like lately; i tried to make it a bit like americans atlatl...The stone is there just as an adortment; i just placed there and i like it there. The finger loop is leather and it is tied up with artificial sinew. The place where you hold the atlatl has been craved on the sides to allow to be hold between your fingers (which is the way i wanted to use this atlatl)

La verdad es que me gustó como se comportó en el campeonato, y eso que apenas lo había probado antes.

Actually, i quite liked the way it shot at the Championship, bearing in mind that i hardly practiced with it previously.
